About I.S. Ng

Biography of Ng Ing Suan:

For the past 19 years I have been very active and passionate in promoting bonsai and stone locally and overseas. As the years go by, I have been organizing exhibitions and competitions all over Malaysia from individual state level to international level. I have the opportunity to meet and make friends from all over the world during these competitions whereby distinguished Bonsai and Stone masters from overseas were invited to grace these occasions to be our judges. Organising trips for our local bonsai and stone masters and members to attend overseas events in China, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and Indonesia which gives us the opportunity and exposure to a better insight of the bonsai and stone of these countries. It is a great honour that in the Year 2008, Bonsai n Stone Academy was appointed as the Ambassador Of Bonsai Clubs International in Malaysia. The following year 2009,myself, Mr. Ng Ing Suan was elected as a board of Director of Bonsai Clubs International. With the establishment of BCI Malaysia it was a historical event which allows Bonsai n Stone members to connect the pool of bonsai and stone masters and enthusiastic bonsai and stone lovers all over the world through the social network of Facebook and Google.

This year marked the 3rd Kuala Lumpur Orchid & Bonsai Show 2015 (KLOBS 2015) at the Perdana Botanical Garden . It was jointly organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Bonsai n Stone Academy. The theme for this year was “Flora, Festival and Food” . Some of the objectives of the City Hall’s were to promote Kuala Lumpur as a green city to the local and overseas visitors and to provide a recreational space and nature conservation for the city residents. it was 10-day event that ran from August 7th to August 16, 2015 and opened to the public from 10:00 morning to 10:00 night.

The Perdana Botanical Garden is a 127 years old botanical garden that was built by A.R. Venting in 1888 and located right in the heart of the city center. It granted its “Botanical Garden” status in 2011. The Bird Park, Butterfly Farm, Deer Park, National Monument, Parliament House are 10 - 15 minutes walk from the botanical garden. The opening ceremony of the 3rd KLOBS 2015 was officiated by the Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan wife, Y. Bhg. Datin Seri Anggraini Sentiyaki, on August 8, 2015 at 9:00am. Prior to the opening, guests were entertained by dancers dressed in flower costume. The dancers were dancing and moving slowly like flowers below the stage area.

The open ceremony started with an amazing performance that saw many flower dancers came into life and put up a stunning performance before the guests. Orchids and bonsai were the main events of attraction. These two events were held not too apart from each other. in between these two events were stalls that sell orchids, bonsai, wood, snacks and beverages. There were small musical bands entertaining visitors from time to time. Besides orchids and bonsai, there were other activities such as photography competition, flower arrangement competition, and children’s colouring and drawing competition. Overseas and local visitors visiting the botanical garden also had the opportunity to enjoy bonsai, orchids, etc and vice versa. 272 bonsai were exhibited this time and they were nicely displayed either on tree trunks or white metal cube stands.

Although it was hot and humid in Kuala Lumpur, the automatic water mists sprayers helped keep the place cool for visitors comfort. The venue was lit up for visitors who could only come in the evening to look at the bonsai. Bonsai species included Juniper Chinensis, Celtis Sinensis, Ficus Mircrocarpa, Muraya Pinaculata, Premna Obtusifolia, Wrightia Religious, Hibiscus, Diospyros Ebenum, Beakea Frutecense, etc. August 6, 2015 was the day for bonsai judging. The invited 5 panels of judges included Master Zheng Zilin, China, Master Lo Min Hsuan, Taiwan, Mr. Rojani Sumarlin Indonesia, Mr. YAP CHOO & Mr. LIM SOON KEONG Malaysia. Bonsai demonstrations were held on August 8 and August 9, 2015. The bonsai masters who gave bonsai demonstration were Mr. Zheng Zilin, Mr. Lo Min Hsuan, Rojani Sumarlin, Bohari Che Mohtar, Chong Yong Yap, The demonstrations attracted a lot of visitors who wanted to learn more about bonsai shaping and techniques.

The award ceremony was held in the Perdana Botanica Garden on August 10, 2015 at the semi enclosed area, about 5-10 minute walk from the bonsai exhibition area.

The YBhg.Datuk Gunaseelan Palanisamy (Ahli Lembaga Penasihat Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur)presented the Mayor n BCI award winning bonsai and owners were as follows :

1. Mayor Award & Gold Award (imported bonsai)- Ficus owner James Chai
2. Bonsai Club International Award & Gold Award (imported bonsai)- Celtis Sinensis owner Chin Choy Fook
3. Mayor Award & Gold Award (local bonsai) - Beakea Frutecense owner TIN CHOK TENG
4. Bonsai Club International Award & Gold Award (local bonsai) - Beakea Frutecense owner Bohari Che Mohtar
5. Queen of Flowers Award - Wrightia Religious owner YONG BOON MENG

There were 400 species of orchids from twenty countries. Countries that participated in the orchid landscape design competition were Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Denmark, Japan, Malaysia, etc. There were orchids competitions for local orchid hobbyists and many orchid lovers and flower lover flocked to this area to admire many variety species of orchids. The flower arrangements competitions were divided into amateur to professional category. It was held in a small room next to the bonsai exhibition area. The contestants were given three hours to present their floral arrangements. The amateur gold award was won by a young lady, Chua Jeh Ying, On August 15 2015 Her Royal Highness Queen of Malaysia Tuanku Hajah Haminah (Ke Bawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Malaysia XIV Tuanku Hajah Haminah ) visited the bonsai and orchids exhibition in the evening of August 9. She spent time walking around viewing bonsai and orchids. She was particularly attracted to a Wrightia Religious, a local bonsai species. The KLOBS 2015 had attracted 100,000 visitors and it has becomes one of the most successful events to reach out to all Malaysians and overseas visitors.

Kuala Lumpur Bonsai & Orchid Show at Perdana Botanical Garden 2014

The 2nd Orchid and Bonsai Show 2014 was held recently at the Perdana Botanical Garden, Kuala Lumpur from May 21 to June 2, 2014. The first show was previously held in the same venue in 2012.

The show was a joint effort by The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur or DBKL) and the Bonsai N Stone Academy.

There were one hundred and seventy six (176) bonsai entries for this year’s show. Species represented included the Wrightia Religiosa (水梅, a very popular local bonsai species), Premna Obtusifolia (寿娘子), Diospyros Ebenum (象牙树), Juniperus Chinensis (真柏), Ficus Microcarpa (榕树), Beackea Frutescens (香松) and others. The bonsai categories were divided into Wrightia Religiosa (水梅), Island (海岛树), Juniperus Chinensis/Ficus (真柏/榕树), Beackea Frutescens (香松), and Assorted (其他杂木) for all sizes of bonsai (from small to Big). Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes were awarded for each of these categories. The Grand prizes were the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, the BCI Excelent Award and the Queen of Flowers..

The Deputy Prime Minister, Y.B. Tan Sri Hj. Muhyiddin Hj. Mohd Yassin officiated the opening of the Orchid and Bonsai Show 2014 in the evening of May 23, 2014, which was attended by about 1,000 guests. Y.B. Tan Sri Hj. Muhyiddin presented the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur prize of RM1,000 and trophy to Mr. Ng Tien Sun (黄丁山先生) for his Ficus Microcarpa,the BCI prize of RM500 and trophy to Mr. Low Ah Seng (刘啟胜先生) for his Wrightia Religiosa,and the Queen of Flowers prize of RM300 and trophy to Mr. Lim Kian Meng (林健民先生) for his Wrightia Religiosa。After the prize giving ceremony and candle light dinner, Y.B. Tan Sri Hj. Muhyiddin accompanied by Mr. I S Ng((黄荣鑽先生) together with other guests spent some time in viewing the bonsai.

There was no entry fee for bonsai this time. According to Mr. I S Ng (黄荣鑽先生), President of the Bonsai N Stone Academy and a Director of BCI, the purpose of a no entry fee was to encourage more bonsai hobbyists to participate in this bonsai show. He also shared the common objective of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to promote bonsai in Malaysia and to promote the Perdana Botanical Garden by hosting various activities so as to attract more local and foreign visitors. The Perdana Botanical Garden was formerly known as Lake Garden, and it was built in 1888 by the late A.R. Venning ( Both the prizes and venues were sponsored by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

For the first time in Kuala Lumpur, an exhibition combining two gardening hobbies was held at the Perdana Botanical Garden. The Bonsai and Orchid Show was one of DBKL's efforts to promote the newly rehabilitated garden to local and international garden enthusiasts. On 24 March 2012, Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di Pertuan Agung Almu'tasmu Billahi Muhibbudin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah (King and Queen)launched the carnival.

Malaysia International Bonsai & Stone Exhibition & Competition 2012 In Conjunction with The Launching of the Malaysian Chapter of The Bonsai Clubs International (BCI)

This is one of the biggest and grandest event in the history of the bonsai and stone in Malaysia. All over Malaysia, bonsai and stone participants submitted over 300 of the best bonsai plants and 180 pieces best stone that were showcased during the exhibition. And for the first time, a total no.of 7 International distinguished masters were invited from China,Indonesia,USA,Singapore,Taiwan,Venezuelaand Philippines to be the judges for this auspicious event.
